Peel Island (Wild Cat)

The inspiration for Arthur Ransome's Wild Cat Island in Swallows and Amazons.

Peel Island, Wild Cat Island, Coniston

Peel Island is famous for being the inspiration for Wild Cat Island in Arther Ransome’s ‘Swallows and Amazons’ novel. It was also the film location in the film adaptions.

Our Wild Cat Island Cruise passes by here to show you the secret harbour.

You can hire a boat or canoe from Coniston Boating Centre to make your way across the lake – explore and paddle around the perimeter of the island to get the best views of the peaceful surrounding landscape.

Bring along your lunch and enjoy a picnic by the lake.

The island has belonged to the National Trust since it was given to them by John Montagu-Douglas-Scott, 7th Duke of Buccleuch, along with 11 acres (4.5 ha) of woodland, in 1932.
